Coaching a team can be a daunting prospect for a new coach, and with winter codes coming up more people are putting their hand up to volunteer.

Great coaches don't happen overnight, so if you're new to coaching or need some tips - we're here to help! Check out the ten things every coach should know:

  1. Learn from those who have been there. Find a mentor who will challenge you, who perhaps has strengths you may lack
  2. It’s not all about the science. HEART not heart rate is the key
  3. Keep it simple. Stick with basics and do them well consistently before you get hung up on complexities
  4. You will never stop learning…ONLY if you are ready to learn. The essence of learning is humility – admitting you don’t know everything and using those around you and your experiences to learn more
  5. Who you are determines your athlete’s success – NOT what you do. If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything
  6. Do not compromise or bend the rules for talent. Athletes must commit to your team and team culture
  7. It’s all about communication – you are in the people business and sport is the vehicle. Master verbal, written and body language as well as eye contact
  8. Develop a culture NOT an athlete or program. Create a culture around your team and club. Culture eats strategy for breakfast.
  9. Politics and personalities. Set up clear guidelines and LEARN how to deal with difficult situations/people
  10. Accept ‘evolution’ as you will change as a coach. Your ideas, your thoughts, your understanding will change
